Iraqi Vigilantes Strike Fear Into the Hearts of Evildoers!
If you want something done right...
Extremely encouraging news from Iraq today!
A "Shadowy Resistance Movement" against the Shiite militiamen led by Muqtada al-Sadr has spontaneously sprung from amongst the population of Najaf- and they seem to making some real headway, and now the Sadr Gang is running scared:
As is the case with most fledgling resistance groups, further details are sketchy. Nobody knows yet who is really behind the group, if the deaths of Mahdi men are its handiwork or, indeed, if it really exists.
Questioned about it at a Baghdad press conference on Tuesday, Brigadier General Mark Kimmitt would say only: "I am not aware of its existence, although we have had some reports of that nature from the city."
It has had, as the article says "a noticeable effect" on deterring the Sadr Militia.
Classic vigilantism, in the "community policing"/"take back the steets" vein! With the appropriate amount of mystery and showmanship to really drive home the deterrence.
Law and order coming from the bottom up ( rather than imposed from the top down) is a great sign- that means the Iraqis want it, and more importantly, are willing to do it themselves!
This gives me great hope for Western-style civil society to take root there post-handover... a period of community-based "frontier" justice- of 'taking out the trash"- is How the West Was Won, remember.
Good Job, Iraqi Vigilantes! Keep up the good work!

This Commencement Address is Brought to You By The Letter "B".
Villanova Students are ticked off at having Carroll Spinney, who plays Sesame Street's "Big Bird", as their commencement speaker. He will be recieving an honorary degree, and will not be appearring in costume.
I don't see what the big deal is- I think it would be cool as hell to have a muppet there! Even if it's just Big Bird. The whole philosophy of the Muppets, at least those on Sesame Street, is that you can have fun while you learn - and isn't that what college is all about?
I can sort of see why they don't like Big Bird representing their education- Big Bird is notoriously slow-witted, even dense-though arguably not so much as Elmo. I would much prefer one of the Jim Henson characters, like Kermit or Ernie. Or a Frank Oz character, like Bert, Miss Piggy, or...Yoda!( not really a Muppet, I know). Man, having the late Henson or Frank Oz as a speaker sans Muppet would be great- these are accomplished artists!
Come to think of it, I guess "the guy who plays Big Bird" is pretty lame in comparison to that... I suppose if you're willing as a school to consider "the Muppet Option", you may as well pick a cooler Muppet. At least it's not "Barney" or the Teletubbies...
